Migrants Social Center, Tsamadou 13a

Description

The history of the Migrants’ Shelter begins in 1997 on the first floor of 35, Valtetsiou Street in Exarchia, on the initiative of the Network of Social Support for Refugees and Migrants. Thus, a meeting place for immigrants and Greeks was slowly created, a place of solidarity, coexistence, freedom and exchange. At the Shelter there were community meetings, the meeting of the coordinating committee of anti-racist and immigrant organizations, events, discussions and an information office for immigrants and refugees. This is where the idea for the anti-racist festival was born. But the Steki also had its cultural life, music, games, feasts, parties, exhibitions. Turkish and Spanish language courses were organized and then the “Piso Thrania”, a group of teachers teaching Greek language to immigrants, was created. In this meeting place of people and ideas, groups were formed, new acquaintances were made, different worlds came together. The shelter was taken care of by a team of Greeks and immigrants who set up and operated with great enthusiasm, exceeding every expectation we had at the beginning of the effort.
